Visiting Guatape (rock + city), and horseback riding in Rionegro were probably the highlight of our trip to Medellin.
That being said, what made this adventure special was our guide! Sara was amazing, punctual, energetic, kind, and super accomodating.
She is a bundle of energy that loves Colombia, and what better way to visit the country than with an energetic local who is passionate about history.
She really took very good care of us the whole time and made our trip an amazing experience!

Visiting Guatape (rock + city), and horseback riding in Rionegro were probably the highlight of our trip to Medellin.
That being said, what made this adventure special was our guide! Sara was amazing, punctual, energetic, kind, and super accomodating.

The two‑hour horseback ride was a blast—beautiful trails, mountain views for days, and Daniel snapped plenty of photos so we could actually enjoy the ride. He even swapped horses with a friend when hers felt a little sluggish—total pro move.
After the ride we hit a local spot for fresh fruit and some strong coffee before tackling the 740 steps up El Peñol. Daniel paced it perfectly, sharing fun facts about the area along the way, and the view at the top was unreal. No rushing, just good vibes and time to soak it all in.

We wanted to go horseback riding but not on a normal trail ride. We got exactly what we wanted and then some. The views were incredible and it was just us. We are experienced riders and they let us do what we wanted. Henry was an incredible tour guide with a ton of knowledge on the history of Medellín. Very friendly as well. The fruit tasting at the end was an added bonus. We were pleasantly surprised and tried a bunch of fruits we would have otherwise never tried! We would highly recommend this tour!!!

Andres made us feel very comfortable in a way where we were able to ask questions, and really made us feel like a local. Andres is also one of the best photographers EVER!! The day riding a horse in the mountains of Medellin was the highlight of a one week trip to Medellin. It was like spending a day with a friend that knows everything about Medellin – the culture, the economics, the history of the area – all the while sitting on exquisitely trained horses, enjoying the mountains and nature outside the city. As another reviewer correctly wrote “amazing tour without feeling like a tourist.” For those of you who have any horseback riding experience, it is a pleasure not to be required to ride nose to tail. If I were permitted to rate the experience with 6 stars, I would.

Andres also took us for a traditional Colombian meal followed by a delicious dessert from the side of the road!

Guatape and Horseback Riding Itinerary
All our tours include pickup and drop off, so we start from your place in Medellin.
Then, we head east of Antioquia to start with our fist activity: The horseback riding.
First Stop: Horseback riding
In our stables you are going to meet your partner for the next two hours, you can pet him and talk to him before we start.
In case you don´t have any riding experience we give you all the instructions to ride a horse.
Whenever you feel comfortable and ready we will begin our ride into a beautiful and unknown nature for a great experience.
We have the ability to adapt the routes depending on your wishes, we have very wild off the beaten track routes, but also very calm and clear paths.
Wild or not all our horseback rides have beautiful sceneries with unforgettable views that will last forever in your memories.
We have great horses! You can canter and gallop if you feel like it, otherwise we can just go slow to appreciate the views.
In Our Horse Ride in Medellin Safety Comes First
This activity is very safe, however we provide insurance to all our guests in case of emergency.
In addition, we always provide two guides for our horseback riding in Medellin with one in the front to lead and the other in the back to follow.
This is to ensure your horse follows the guide and stays with the group.
We are very proud to not have had an accident to date in over 200 rides, which is why we recommend you follow all the guide's instructions at all times.
After 2 hours we will finish the ride, say thank you and goodbye to our beautiful horses and head to our next destination: The incredibly rock of Guatape.
Second stop: The Guatape Rock
At this massive rock you get the chance to climb up it. It's 658 steps and 40 minutes approximately to go up and down.
Once you reach the top, you can stay up there for as long as you wish as you´ll witness one of the most beautiful views you have ever seen.
This is not only our opinion but that of hundreds of tourists we have taken there.
However, our Guatape and Horseback riding tour still has more to offer.
Third Stop: Guatape Town The City of Zocalos
Our next destination is Guatape, one of the most colorful and picturesque towns in Colombia.
At this town we take a fully narrated walking tour through the town´s landmarks: church, main square, remembrance street, Zocalos Square and more.
After we finish our visit in this beautiful Guatape town we head back in our comfortable private car.
This is a tour full of good memories, adventure on horses and insights on the culture of this region that will leave you very satisfied.

Our friendly driver, Henry, promptly picked us up at our hostel. We arrived at the horse stables and met Andres who warmly welcomed us and offered his horse to me to use on the tour. We cantered and galloped on a scenic hillside road/trail. We stopped for drinks and snacks at a local family farm and enjoyed the countryside scenery. Henry explained in detail the history of the various towns and areas we passed by on our way to Guatape and El Pinol Rock. We stopped for lunch and coffee after exploring the picturesque streets of guatape. It was a long day but a great tour if you have limited time in Medellin!

Laura was an incredible tour guide and took us horseback riding, to the rock at Guatape one day. We had such a great time we decided to book a second trip to go see Communa 13 the next day. She took time to explain a lot of the history to us as well as teach us a few fun things about Guatape and Medillin. Cannot recommend her enough! Andres was incredibly helpful in setting everything up and making sure we had a great time! Cannot wait to come back! Highly recommend the horseback riding and Guatape tour in addition to the Communa 13 tour!

We started early, meeting Estefania’s incredibly well-cared-for rescue horses for a beautiful two-hour ride through the lush, green outskirts of Medellín. While I am a rider, I had never ridden in the Colombian style before, and I must say that anyone trained in English riding should try it, it allows you to connect with the horses and the surrounding nature in a really special way. At the same time, this trip would also be absolutely ideal for non-riders or more hesitant riders who want to see the countryside from a completely different perspective, the horses are calm, gentle, and incredibly well trained, which makes the experience feel both safe and deeply enjoyable. Estefania’s horses are wonderful, attentive, happy, and clearly very well looked after. Next time, I will definitely be doing this ride with my 7-year-old daughter as well.

She continually curated and re-curated the itinerary on the spot, responding effortlessly to my interests and energy levels. And as someone who genuinely seems to know everyone in Guatapé, from parking attendants to artists to every street dog by name, she offers a deeply personal and intimate experience of a town that is otherwise full of tourists.
