We spent our last day in Medellín with a private day trip to Guatapé and a coffee farm tour. Our guide Erika, picked us up from our place in Poblado and we drove into the countryside to the rock of El Peñón de Guatapé for a hike to the top. Lots of stairs, but the views are to die for!
Afterwards we headed into the town of Guatapé for some lunch and some shopping. Erika made sure to show us parts of the town that were not just for tourists, and we got to meet a plethora of local artists and artisans.
Finally, we went to the coffee farm and got to learn about the whole process from the planting of the seeds, through growth and cultivation, to processing and finally tasting! We got to get hands on and pick beans and participate in both new and traditional processing methods. It was a perfect end to a day filled with fun, laughter, learnings, and culture.
Our guide, Erika, made sure that we had the greatest experience from beginning to end!

Erika is the best tour guide I’ve ever had! She is incredibly sweet, knowledgeable, and made us feel so welcome from the very start. On our tour to the coffee farm, fruit market, and Guatapé, she explained everything with such detail and passion that we learned so much while having fun. She always made sure everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves, and her energy was truly contagious. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Medellín, and I couldn’t recommend Erika more highly!

Erika was so kind and knowledgeable, she took us to a petting zoo to celebrate my daughter’s birthday and even brought her cake. The coffee tour was so interactive and informative. Could not have asked for a better day. Highly recommend.

He was very patient throughout the tour. NO pressure on us with the times and still organized everything DE so efficiently that we could take full advantage of each stop, even taking pictures in places that are usually full DE people.

This was a perfect day trip from Medellín! Laura was with on this excursion and her conversation in the car was great, given that there was a fair amount of travel time. She shared with us so much about the history of Guatapé, and the fruit tasting is a must. Surprisingly, our 9 and 12 year old children said their favorite part of the day was visiting the coffee farm and hearing about the process from Miller. If booking this, make sure to ask for Laura; she made our time in Medellín 10/10!

At the beginning of May we had the opportunity to join a tour with MedellinDayTrips and it was certainly one of the best experiences we had in Colombia.
The tour began with a visit to a coffee farm, where we could not only collect coffee beans with our own hands, but also taste different types of coffee and learn everything about the process: from growing the plant, harvesting, drying, roasting, to reaching the cup. It was really fascinating to see the work and passion behind each sip.
Our guide, Erika, was just wonderful. With much enthusiasm and knowledge, he explained the history and culture of Medellín, and along the way he shared very interesting facts about the Stone of the Peñol, its origin and the importance it has for the region. Then we visited the beautiful town of Guatapé, where Erika told us about the history of the zocalos, the local traditions and helped us discover corners that we might not have known on our own.
In addition, we recommended an excellent restaurant for lunch, where we could enjoy delicious typical food with a spectacular view.
It was a full day, well organized, enriching and fun.
We recommend this tour 100% if you want to know not only the tourist places, but also the essence and soul of Antioquia

Sara was the best tour guide I have ever had throughout all the tours I’ve been on worldwide. She arrived early, was so polite, accommodating, very informative and smart. She contagiously smiled through the entire day and was so patient with us, even when I may have asked the same question on multiple occasions. She made sure we were safe and comfortable throughout the trip and I can tell that she’s made so many connections with everyone at every stop due to her great personality!
The tour took us to such beautiful scenes and oh how I loved all the eats and drinks! The coffee, food, frozen fruit infused soda water, craft beer, fruit tasting… A day of flavour!

This was one of our very favorite experiences of our whole Colombian trip. It was the only tour we could find for our short trip to Medellin that had a coffee farm and trip to Guatape, and it was perfect. We were picked up at our apartment and the first stop was fruit tasting; what a treat! We enjoyed trying all of the new and unique types of fruit. Next was the coffee farm; we enjoyed meeting the family (even their grandson and puppy were in on the fun) and our kids loved picking and processing the coffee fruit. It was interesting to see the growing/cultivating process first hand, even getting to try a bit ourselves. The trip up Piedra de Penol was beautiful and the view from the top is worth every step. We had a great lunch at a local spot recommended by Andres, our guide and he gave us an informative tour around Guatape. Andres was a great guide and we enjoyed our day with him traveling around the countryside. We would definitely encourage anyone to do this tour.

First off- I don’t usually go on tours. I like to do things myself, on my own timeline and definitely NOT in a large group of strangers.
I was hesitant to book this tour for those reasons but after a few online chats with Andres from Medellin Day Trips, all my concerns were addressed. That was only the beginning!
I was short on time so we had to limit the tour where we could. The amount of patience and understanding that I received made my entire trip to Colombia pleasant. I learned so much and had such a wonderful experience, and still got back to my apartment to get COVID tested well early enough to prepare for the flight back to the states.
We found the best cookies ever made in a
tiny shop in Guatape and brought some home. I even left my wallet in the van at the end of the trip and it was returned to me. If your thinking about booking this tour. Do it! You won’t be disappointed!

Spending a day with Andres is like hiring a new best friend for the day. He’s so much fun to be around and gives great insights about Guatape and Medellin. He’s thoughtful, funny, intelligent and the experience he’s crafted is anything but commercial. We went on the coffee farm and guatape full day private tour, so it was just me, my fiancé and Andres. He picked us up at our hotel, was an extremely safe driver, as he drove us 1.5hrs there and back plus driving in between. He found out our interests (trying new foods) and incorporated them into our tour! He took us to delicious restaurants and food stands at reasonable prices. He truly believes in all of the establishments we visited. He has great relationships with people at every place we went to which is a true testament to what a great person he is!
We learned so much about Colombian history, Colombian culture, saw a new part of Medellin away from the city and made a friend!

Oscar was a wunderful guide who really knows a lot about his country. His englisch was excellent and the way he explains things makes you even being more curious about everything. we started our journey by testing some exotic fruits, went to the el peñol rock, to guatape where we had a delicious lunch and at the end we went to a sweet coffee farm and learned everything about the production of the coffee!

My friend and I went on the full day tour with Andres, and we had the best time! The highlight of the trip was the coffee farm, where we got to pick coffee cherries with the farmer who owns the land. Andres was very knowledgeable about the coffee, Guatapé, and even walked up all 700 steps of Peñol to help us take pictures at the top. He’s very kind and was constantly making sure we were okay throughout the day. I highly recommend taking this tour with him!

Guatape and Coffee Farm Tour Itinerary
All our tours are private and include pickup and drop off, so we start from your place at the time that is more convenient for you.
Then, we head east of Antioquia to start with our first delicious stop.
Exotic Fruit Tasting
Colombia is the most diverse country in the world in fruit production, as we grow over 430 fruits throughout our territory.
This is why we think we should take you to a fruit stand to try some of them.
In this short stop we provide you different exotic fruits you probably didn't even know existed, with intense sour or sweet flavors.

After delighting the palate with these exotic fruits we are ready to head to our second stop: the Coffee Farm.
Coffee Farm Tour
At the coffee plantation you meet a lovely traditional coffee farmer that will walk us through the amazing world of coffee.
We start our coffee tour with an introduction in which we explain the different stages of coffee production from the moment they are planted to when they are ready to be picked from the trees.
After this complete introduction we start to pick coffee beans in the plantation.
After picking coffee beans we peel, ferment and wash them to remove the mucilage and continue to the next stage.
Drying the coffee beans
The coffee beans need to be completely dry in order to be processed.
To do this, a type of green-house called Marquesina is used, which keeps and increases the heat inside drying the beans faster.
Threshing, Roasting, Grinding and Packing the coffee
When the coffee beans are completely dry we need to remove the shell so we use a machine to do it.
The result of this process is the green coffee. This is the stage at which most of the Colombian coffee is exported.
However, in our coffee tour the process goes further with the roasting process having 3 different levels depending on your taste:
- Highly roasted.
- Medium-high (most popular one).
- Medium.
The next process is the grinder, where we put the brown roasted beans to grind.
Finally, the last process is packing the fresh coffee you just processed.
After our hosts pack the coffee you can buy it directly from them at a very fair price.
After learning everything about coffee, we go towards the Guatape Rock.
Climbing Up The Guatape Rock
At this massive rock you get the chance to climb up it. It's 749 steps and 50 minutes approximately to go up and down.
Once you reach the top, you can stay up there for as long as you wish as you witness one of the most beautiful views you have ever seen.
This is not only our opinion but that of hundreds of tourists we have taken there.

Guatape Town The City of Zocalos
At this town we take a fully narrated walking tour through the town's landmarks: church, main square, remembrance street, Zocalos Square and more.
If you like shopping this is a good place to do it since there are a lot of hand crafted souvenirs and all kind of items to bring back home.
After we finish our visit in this beautiful Guatape town we head back in our comfortable private car.
This is a tour full of good memories and insights on coffee and the culture of this region that will leave you very satisfied.

Diego was an excellent and personable tour guide. He has built great relationships in the areas we visited and it felt like getting a personal tour from a local friend. There were multiple aspects of the trip that we never could have planned ourselves as foreign tourists – visiting a farmer’s market in a small town to try fruits, interacting with a small coffee producer, and learning about the zocalos in Guatape. We were able to move through the day’s stops at our own pace and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

My family of four had a great time with Diego. He arrived at our hotel in El Poblado on time to pick us up. He actually arranged to pick us up early so that we could get to the flower farm before the big crowds arrived. It worked perfectly. We were the only ones there, and we saw the big tour buses arriving just as we were leaving! We stopped in Marinilla at the farmer’s market to taste exotic fruits. Again, we were the only tourists there! We then climbed the stairs to the top of La Piedra del Peñol, and then headed over to tour the colorful town of Guatapé. We had a very good day with Diego and he was kind enough to drop us off at a different hotel near the airport.

This tour was amazing! However our tour guide Erika was even more amazing. We did a private tour with my friend and 11 month daughter and she was on time and so accommodating! She advised to do the tour in reverse due to the weather and that was a smart decision for us. She knows everyone and all the best spots. She is also incredibly knowledgeable on everything. There wasn’t a question she could not answer. I learned so much on the tour from here. Plus in general during the ride she was a great conversationalist. She really made the experience for us!!
